16S rRNA Gene Sequencing

Overview

A common method for bacterial identification leverages sequence analysis of the 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene, which has also proven to be useful as a tool in phylogenetics and taxonomy. Whether you are identifying a single isolate, studying a population of microorganisms, or even investigating environmental samples, Retrogen’s 16S rRNA gene sequencing delivers high-quality resolution.

Ready to Sequence

There are a number of conserved sequences in various regions throughout the 16S rRNA gene. Use of primers designed to these areas allows amplification of short segments, or the complete gene. Sequencing of these amplicons provides useful information for identifying the bacteria present in a sample. If you have amplified your target regions of the 16S rRNA gene using either your own primer designs or any of the third-party kits available for preparing your 16S sample, you can submit these purified amplicons along with your template-specific primers for sequencing. Retrogen’s sequencing department will provide you with high-quality sequencing results.

Full 16S rRNA Gene Sequencing

For comprehensive identification of your samples, full 16S rRNA gene sequencing provides excellent accuracy and confidence in your calls. Using PCR to amplify the entire 16S rRNA gene, Retrogen can amplify, purify, and provide high-quality sequencing of the gene, allowing you to confidently identify your samples.

Sequencing from a Mixed Sample

If your sample is environmental, or you know it contains a mixed population of bacteria, the 16S rRNA gene amplicons are cloned into a plasmid vector. After being grown, the inserts are sequenced in both directions, providing high-quality sequence data.

Benefits

  • Flexible project format to suit your experimental needs.
  • Knowledgeable and friendly technical support.
  • Quick turnaround time.
  • High-quality results.
